Dachshunds - Puppies - Do They Need Much Exercise?
Dachshunds are active dogs and will appreciate you involving them in a variety of activities. At the age of 2 months, the Dachshund puppy should stay out of doors not less than 2 hours 3 or 4 times a day. It is extremely important to help the puppy develop its muscular system and coordination at this stage. However, avoid being too persistent. Doing something at the breaking point can be dangerous for the puppy's health and is able to spoil its character.

Your puppy is new to the world and needs your help to develop into the intelligent Dachshund you want. Usually, Dachshunds are not difficult to housebreak. However, there are certain rules an owner should follow to speed up this process. Don't use an old carpet as a place where your puppy can relieve itself. It will identify any carpet with this place. Use a plastic crate with material you will easily change instead.
Communication with your puppy at the very early stage mustn't be underestimated. Dachshunds are said to be very smart dogs that tend to choose one member of family to adore. However friendly and nice the Dachshund can be with its family, you can rely on its skills as a guard dog. It will alarm you when strangers are around. Since the Dachshund is born with a keen nose and a notorious ability to bark loudly, these skills should be encouraged in a young puppy.
Dachshunds are prone to back problems. Therefore, the Dachshund puppy shouldn't be allowed to run upstairs until it is at least 6 months old. Such bad habits as jumping on the sofa, chewing carpets, blankets and gnawing pieces of furniture should be averted in puppies.
The Dachshund puppy should be allowed to go out of doors only after two weeks since the puppy has been inoculated against most diseases.
If you have to leave your pup unattended for some time and choose to place it in the living room, don't expect it to behave properly. It is better to leave the puppy in a room like your kitchen. It is more difficult to make a complete mess out of it. Anyway, the puppy should have fresh water and enough space and light. As a rule, Dachshunds are easy to train. All the difficulties are usually over by the age of 6 months in Dachshunds.
