Dachshunds belong to German breeds. The actual formation of the breed took place in South Germany in the 16th century. The dogs of earlier time that are known to have resembled the Dachshund are not considered pure Dachshund dogs.

Dachshunds were specially bred to hunt badgers and this ultimate purpose is reflected in the name, which means, "badger dog." However, this earth dog was soon recognized as an excellent companion pet.

During the First and the Second World War, the Dachshund was out of favor. However, soon afterwards Dachshunds regained its popularity all over the world.
